lex/yacc are too complicated

• A lot of state information to pass around

  • "GENE" can be a keyword, the author's name, part of the description or part of the sequence
  • State communication is explicit and error prone

• What's a "shift/reduce" error?

• I never understood error handling in yacc

• Sometimes more than 1 lookahead is needed
